Why do you have an Optiver section?

Because I like Optiver!

You like a global market maker?

Yes.

How did you find out about Optiver?

It’s a secret!!

Where does the name Optiver come from?

From the Dutch word optieverhandelaar! This translates quite directly to options handler, which in English vernacular would be “options trader”

I still don’t understand what a rando has in common with a market maker!

I’d say we’re interested in the same thing… Separating the signal from the noise!!!

Ok, I’m in. Please elucidate further!

Noise is a universal phenomenon.Indeed, it’s actually part of the birth of the universe! Think the cosmic microwave background. This is leftover energy from the birth of the universe! It’s inescapable! It was first discovered by two Bell lab researchers who were trying to eliminate all sources of noise from their space radio telescope. When they cleaned the pigeon droppings and it was still there, they knew the source was the universe itself!

How do you separate the signal from the noise?

Very carefully, using heuristics and math. For the uninitiated, heuristics can be thought of as “rules of thumb” which allow you to make quick estimations.

How does Optiver do it?

I don’t know, but I think they are using a similar approach to me.

Tell me more!!

Will do. Let’s work through some of Optiver’s brain teasers! That will help with both our math and our heuristics!
